Spring Still Hasn’t Sprung !!

Today was a rather cool day on the Irfon with Chuck from San Francisco, there was a very strong cold wind with plenty of rain to damper spirits, but the brown trout didn’t seem to mind too much, it seemed a little strange that in the un seasonal weather there was quite a good hatch of LDO’s and the odd March Brown but next to nothing coming up for them, so nymphs it was, the first run we tried was a little concerning for me as not a touch not quite how you want to start a guided day, but onwards and upwards the next run looked lovely if  a little shallow in the low water conditions but he trout were there and feeling hungry Chuck landed 4-5 and had another 3 close to the net only to come off so things were looking up one nice thing was all the fish were very acrobatic as soon as the hook was set the fish would come flying out of the water.

We moved onto another run and the rain was finally easing with in 5-6 cast Chuck was into another brown around a half to three quarters of a pound mark and yet again it came flying out of the water trying to shake the hook out of its mouth, then another fish was on this time the smallest fish Chuck had hooked around 9″ long but just as it came to the net the hook came out and off it went ( low impact catch and release came to mind )by now the sun was out and I was getting quite excited to think that the LDO’s would start hatching in force and Chuck could have some dry fly sport, but it was the total opposite Chuck carried on fishing for around another 1-2 hours and the river just died, insects in the air but no rises and no more bites.
