A day with Ben the butcher today, Ben wanted to learn all about fly fishing a tall order in just one day, but as always I would try my best, we went through the gear, safety, set up, how the casts work and are performed and then it was over to Ben to have a go, to be fair as Ben hadn’t ever picked a fly rod up he is a very fast learner, with both roll and overhead cast, even false casting and shooting line off both shoulders, which makes life easy for me, I like quick learners.
After lunch we moved onto the fishing side of things, fly selection, how to read the water/ where to put the fly with out it dragging, as always when people start to concentrate on the fishing the casting gets a little worse, but everything with Ben was going well, in the first run he caught 3 browns and lost a better grayling, so it was time for a move and show Ben a different method, this time a run with more pace and I thought I would show Ben how to fish dries in its different forms up stream,, across the stream and also down stream, not sure if Ben was getting a little tired as he reaction time had slowed a little as he missed around 4 fish, but then a nice grayling was on, around ten minutes later another fish was thrashing around this time a bigger grayling, which Ben said ” had made his day ” time was getting close to the end of the day so it seemed a good time to end the day, on a high!!
Jus in case you didn’t know a bloody butcher is a fishing fly and not the state of Ben’s apron after hard days work !!
