It’s a sad fact of life that fewer youngsters are coming into fishing these days. So when one of these shows willing, we need to nurture that interest. This is exactly what Pro guide Andrew Cartwright has done with junior angler Daniel who started dabbling in fly fishing at the tender age of 5. For his eighth birthday Daniel received a pair of chest waders which topped his wish list (makes a change from Xbox games…). Keen to try them out he dashed off to the Welsh Wye under the watchful eye of Andrew. Of course, in such circumstances safety is paramount so Andrew remains on hand at all times. As you’d expect, most beginners pick up the Czech (short line) nymphing technique pretty quickly as little casting is involved. However, Daniel has his sights firmly set on dry fly fishing, which Andrew thinks has much to do with the visual aspect of fly fishing. Whatever it is, let’s hope this youngster keeps up he good work.
